"Anticipating a response from a suspect is very much akin to anticipating a move by a chess opponent,' Youngquist said in a recent interview. "I try to use the skills that I learn on the chessboard in my tool bag."

Chess hones his conceptual and tactical thinking skills, which he uses to resolve crimes. "That is extremely important, not only in police work, but in life,' he said. "Being able to filter your choices down to the very best move is extremely important."
